Understanding and Using Newsgroups
Newsgroup Netiquette
by Peter Doshi

One thing to keep in mind while using Usenet is that it is a public medium, and so what you say will be read by many other people just like yourself. As a general rule of thumb, don't write anything you wouldn't want other people to write. And when engaging in discussions or debates, be respectful and courteous at all times.

One particular dislike of many veteran "Usenet junkies" is messages posted to the wrong group. Oh, and one other - mass posting. Although Usenet does allow you to post your message to more than one newsgroup at the same time, many people do not like it when its inappropriate. One inappropriate use would be to post your forsale items to ca.forsale (California forsale) when you live in New Jersey. Keep that sort of post limited to nj.forsale and perhaps phl.forsale (Philadelphia forsale).

When replying to a post, there are certain conventions to follow. Usually, new post lines should exceed quoted material by at least 50%. In addition, make sure to take off the original poster's signature when replying.

Do not send attachments unless it is clear that the newsgroup is a binaries type newsgroup in which attaching files is acceptable. For the majority of Usenet newsgroups, attaching files is strong acceptable. If in doubt, ask.

All in all, just use your judgment. And when you're out of line, chances are that you will be told so as people tend to be quite vocal on Usenet.
