Making Usable Websites:

Writing for the Web

As a result web pages have to employ scannable text, using

  • highlighted keywords
  • meaningful sub-headings
  • bulleted lists
  • small paragraphs (chunking) conveying one idea
  • start with a conclusion (Inverted pyramid style)
  • 50% of regular number of words

On 14.4 Kbps a 10K page takes about 10 secs to load. Thus we have

  • 0 -10K : exemplary
  • 10-20K : well-optimized
  • 20-40K : adequate
  • 40-60K : dubious
  • > 60K : unacceptable

Human factors study suggests that the page size must be less than 30K. These sizes are inclusive of graphics. A 72 Dpi graphics takes 3950 bytes. Every 25 Dpi increase requires 3K increase in size approximately.
