Internet Config is a small utility software which configures a preferences file in the Mac, which can be globally used by various softwares like Browsers E-mail clients and ftp clients for setting up their preferences. If ever these settings have to change, all you have to do is change the settings in the Internet Config. The settings of the softwares that use Internet Config settings will dynamically change. We will however be focusing on the settings relative to e-mail setup. There will be tips on what you will find in the other settings within Internet Setup.
  1. Open Internet Config. The utility is located at Hard Disk: Internet: Internet Utilities: Internet Config folder. The window that opens has settings for the various aspects of the Internet like personal, WWW, e-mail, helper software settings for files downloaded or processing.

  2. Click on the Personal button in the Internet Config window and you will see a dialogue box wherein you will enter your personal data and signature that you want to appear in your mails automatically.

  3. After you have entered the personal data, click on the E-mail button and in the window fill in your e-mail address and the account name like abcd@bom1.vsnl.net.in. Both these info are same. Next enter the SMTP Host which will be like bom1.vsnl.net.in. You can enter e-mail headers if you want and also change the sound options. These are optional.

  4. Now save the Internet Config preferences from the file menu and quit it.

Other stuff you would like to know about Internet Config.

  1. The file transfer is for setting up your ftp servers that you frequently log on to like Info-Mac etc. You can change them according to your needs late on.

  2. Other services are for the different services you could use like Telnet and you can assign your telnet host. These settings are optional and you can set them if you want to and have the necessary information.

  3. Fonts as you guessed is for setting your personal settings of fonts.

  4. The other buttons are for setting up of File Mapping, Helpers and FireWalls. Try not to change the File Mapping and the Helpers unless you are sure about them. These settings are automatically generated when you install Softwares. You can change them. For example if I want to use Netscape for browsing and Claris for emailing, I will go to the Helpers and change the http: to Netscape and mailto: to Claris Emailer. Like wise if I download a .zip file and I want to open it using StuffIt Expander I will change the settings in File Mappings. These two are powerful settings and effect globally as with other settings. A mistake in any could lead to garbage data on your Mac.

Now its time for you to select your favorite E-mail software settings.

Click here to go to the top and select your favorite e-mail software from the buttons palette.
